1. Therapist Qualifications

  • Is the therapist Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA)?
  • Does the therapist have experience working with children with autism, specifically at your child’s age and developmental level?
  • Are they open to collaborating with other professionals (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists)?

2. Therapeutic Approach

  • Does the therapist use evidence-based practices and stay updated on the latest research in autism therapy?
  • Are the goals of therapy individualized based on your child’s unique strengths and challenges?
  • Does the therapist focus on enhancing communication and social skills rather than just compliance?

3. Positive Reinforcement

  • Does the therapist emphasize positive reinforcement rather than punishment or aversive techniques?
  • Are rewards and reinforcements tailored to your child’s interests and preferences?
  • Is there a clear and consistent system for rewarding positive behaviors?

4. Focus on Emotional and Social Context

  • Does the therapist take into account your child’s emotional state and sensory needs during sessions?
  • Is there a focus on understanding the reasons behind specific behaviors rather than just modifying them?
  • Are social skills taught in naturalistic settings rather than solely in structured environments?

5. Generalization of Skills

  • Does the therapist work on helping your child generalize learned skills to different settings (e.g., home, school, community)?

  • Is there a focus on functional skills that your child will use in daily life?

6. Respect for Autonomy

  • Does the therapist respect your child’s choices and preferences during therapy sessions?

  • Are natural behaviors, such as stimming, acknowledged and respected rather than suppressed?

7. Flexibility and Adaptability

  • Is the therapy adaptable to your child’s changing needs and preferences?
  • Does the therapist modify strategies based on what works best for your child?
  • Are sessions designed to allow for spontaneous, child-led learning and exploration?

8. Family Involvement

  • Does the therapist encourage and involve family members in the therapy process?
  • Are parents given training and strategies to reinforce skills at home?
  • Is there open communication regarding your child’s progress and any concerns you may have?

9. Environment and Setting

  • Is the therapy setting comfortable and conducive to learning?
  • Are sessions conducted in a natural environment, or is there a balance between structured and unstructured play?
  • Does the therapist create a positive and safe space for your child to express themselves?

10. Data Tracking and Progress Monitoring

  • Is data collected regularly to monitor your child’s progress and effectiveness of interventions?
  • Are you provided with regular updates and reports on your child’s progress and areas needing improvement?
  • Is there an explanation of how data influences treatment decisions?
